Who?

Jonny. Hi.

What?

Creator, doing work that led to the creation of three new companies (two sold so far), as well as additional customers, platforms, features, revenue streams, and exits for others.

Where?

California's beautiful central coast: San Luis Obispo.

(3h driving or 30m flying to San Francisco or Los Angeles.)

Why?

I got into psychology, but in a sciencey way. Psychology can be a bit vague, but I think studying human behavior is important primarily because the other sciences are so powerful. We can power a city or destroy one with atomic power. We can cure diseases or create chimeras. We can enslave or enable young minds. I run around feeling—for these reasons—that it's important to understand what we were all actually running around trying to do (more musings here).

After I earned my fifth degree they said, "That's enough, you. Go teach!" I enjoyed teaching undergrad and grad classes at three different universities for a decade—staying current and puffing heady ideas around. But I felt about a meter off the ground, not quite touching reality. So I learned to translate research into businesses.

How?

Over 20 years I've used creativity, messaging, and research best practices to change and measure the behavior of entertainment consumers, students, language learners, writers, fitness studio owners, entrepreneurs, developers, employees, patients, and large organizations. I've specialized in systems involving lots of humans, including platforms, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and recommendation engines. I'm trained and practiced in ideation, design thinking, story, all qualitative methods, most quantitative methods, and all methods where research meets business (customer development, design thinking, UX/UI).

I'm generally happy to chat, especially about creative projects, applied research, and hopeful possibilities that come about as technology advances.

Yup. Talk soon.
